Welcome to El dos Cadena Alpacas, we specialise in breeding the rare coloured Suri Alpacas, mid/dark fawns and browns. It is the Suri's alluring silky ringlet locks of fleece that distinguishes them from the more commonly seen Huacaya alpaca. We also have a small complimentary herd of quality coloured and white Huacaya Alpacas.
Domesticated over 5000 years ago, and farmed for their luxurious fleece, in the high plains of the Andean mountains, by the ancient Inca people of South America, they are still a major part of farming in Chile and Peru today. With our cold winters and warm temperate summers, alpacas are well suited to New Zealand conditions, especially the Canterbury area of the South Island.
Residing with our young family on our 11 acre property at Swannanoa, North Canterbury, our aim is to continue to improve the overall quality of our alpacas, with emphasis on colour, fineness and lustre of fleece. We are not just breeding alpacas, but believe the way forward in the industry is to utilise the alpaca fleece for its original use as a superb fibre, so we also have fibre, yarn and garments made mainly from our own alpacas for sale. We take pride in knowing that our majority of fibre and yarn we sell are soley from animals we have bred, raised, and cared for and only use NZ processing mills to help us produce our yarns, and local knitters for handcrafted garments .
We are fully registered members with the Alpaca Association of New Zealand (AANZ), and our Stud Males fully registered and certified.
Our alpacas share our property with a small flock of fine-wool coloured Merino sheep, and a multitude of other small pets.
